Ladies and gentlemen I am the delegate of Madagascar to tell why the climate treaty in Copenhagen is an action which the world must take. I would like to start off by giving you five words: Present, Future, Urgency, Responsibility, and Abundant. These five words are explaining the reasons for the need of the climate treaty in Copenhagen.
The present generations are the people who are feeling climate change more than anyone. They are the ones who are being poured with acidic rain; they are the ones who cannot see properly because of the smog effects. These people are the ones who want to live a life in which they do not suffer from problems concerning the climate change. For this it is the climate treaty which will alleviate the situations.
Now on to the next word, “future”. Could you close your eyes and think about your childhoods where you were running around breathing in the fresh air, playing in the cleanest rivers, and playing with the pure white snow. These are truly beautiful sights; however, will it be the sights which your future generations will see? The answer is ambiguous but if we are to take the steps to improve the environment gradually and properly, we will be able to present Mother Nature to our children.
Urgency is the word which stands for countries which can actually drown in the future. Like my country there are many island countries around the globe and some are on the verge of going under. In the near future Island of Fuvalu will drown because of increasing sea levels. This country in fact one of the lowest greenhouse gas emitters but still are having problems with their existence itself. Also Maldives a famous nature resort can be gone in the year 2100 if we are not careful. Though it is nearly a century away without careful steps it could happen in reality.
Responsibility is a word which is given to every single one of us. We are responsible for the actions we take and if there is a price we have to pay it. The developed countries which are prospering right now: America, Britain, France, Germany, and others. Their foundation for the wealth was the industrial revolution. Also it is the industrial revolution which is the fundamental reason why we are having these climate crises. Concluding that there is more responsibility to the developed countries and it is their responsibility to sign this treaty in Copenhagen.
Last but not least, abundant. We have been told to always share with others when we were little. We strive for an ideal society where all are equal; the reality is that some countries are better off than others. But do these countries need more? No. They already have enough so it is time for them to compromise and help others who are in dire need. To help I mean by giving an environment where these counties could expand their riches. For this to happen we acknowledge that signing the treaty is one of the best actions that can be taken.
