Buzz Cuts Winner Announced

Posted by Victoria Baxter | March 18, 2008

Congratulations to Emily Renzelli of West Virginia University. She is the winner of Buzz Cuts, a contest to create an innovative campaign on campuses about malaria prevention. Her Bite Back campaign educated students about malaria and raised money to send lifesaving bed nets to Africa.

As students completed three activities, they received a bracelet. One said "B" for believe, the next "U" for understand, and the final one said "G" for give - all spelling out BUG! See her final video toolkit to learn more.  Congratulations, Emily!

The video is very cool and I like the various stages of action Emily took to reach her goal. In agreement with Sarah, I feel like nets are a very feasible and legitimate option for combating malaria. I'd be interested to hear how much money Emily has raised and how many nets she has purchased so far.

Congrats to Emily for her work, its great to see action being taken against Malaria. I often wonder if most students aren't aware that almost 1 million children are dying each year - I can't think of any other reason to explain why more efforts aren't being made.

From research I've looked into, bed nets seem to be one of the most effective ways of preventing malaria. This option is much easier and more cost effective than treatment.
