Hey potential Global Debaters! We're really excited to announce the Fall 2009 Global Debates topic! Ever wonder about the human impact of climate change? The effects of climate change can have very real and complicated consequences for humanity. From projected rises in sea level to increases in severe weather patterns, climate change will have an impact on all of us, but those who live in the worlds poorest communities will be the most vulnerable. This Global Debates topic provides a unique opportunity for us to look at the intersection between climate change and poverty. "When it cannot do both, the United Nations should prioritize poverty reduction over combating climate change." The Millennium Campaign has said, “We cannot fight climate change without considering the rising energy needs of poor people…nor can we effective address global poverty without accounting for the impacts of climate change…” What is the responsibility of the UN in ensuring that we meet the challenges that both of these issues present? This topic is a particularly relevant one, as this December global leaders will be grappling with these issues and more while they strive to come to a global consensus and create a plan for combating climate change. In addition to the new topic, we have stream-lined our points system, created spiffy new toolkits and extended our debate calendar in order to give you the optimum amount of resources and opportunities to submit your very best work.
