Combating Climate Change
Charles Harrington is a student at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. As one of the largest institutions in the Atlantic provinces, he has become a sustainability leader by performing environmental audits throughout the 100+ campus buildings and establishing areas to improve energy efficiency. Charles' current project focuses on developing a university sustainable transportation and climate change plan, while providing an open forum where the entire campus community can offer feedback on how Dalhousie should combat climate change.

Plenty of progress in the works at Dalhousie. We recently held out first climate change meeting, with interested members of staff, faculty and student organizations. This introductory sessions was hosted by the Office of Sustainability, and detailed current efforts as well as discussing what future reduction goals should be targeted by the university. We are in the process of collecting all the necessary information to calculate our total campus carbon footprint, as part of the overall GHG inventory and reduction measures. Coming up we will be having a second meeting on sustainable transportation, which covers travel to/from campus, between campuses, and off campus for university purposes. The date for the on-campus all day climate change workshop with SEI has been tentatively set for Sept. 24th, 2009. Methods of advertising and generating interest are being considered, as we like to see as much campus community participation as possible at this workshop.
